Procrastination as a virtue

Burgers and Fries

I still remember when I was a kid growing up and raised by my paternal grandparents, we had many times that either gramma OR grampa would make burgers and fries at home.

Every Friday, you see- grampa would stop by the burger stand on Airport Blvd between Springdale and Oak Springs Blvd. to pick up 5 burgers for $1.00 and bring them home for us grandkids and parents to eat with fries. (There is also a story about these burgers for a buck...but later in my personal blog. (check that out soon- it will be up and a link attached here.)

Well, as times got tough, this luxury was not afforded, but my grampa knew how to still make it a tradition. On Wednesdays,...if I recall correctly...- Grampa Ralph would let all his kids know what the plan was for Friday dinner and also the Sunday Supper at his house! He would write it down for all to see...(and for Gramma to call the family and let them know what was up.- We didn't have cell phones or WiFi to get info out on the double-quick!)

Grampa Ralph would pick up hamburger meat on Thursday night and bring it home and prepare it for Friday burger night.

He mixed in all the ingredients into the mix and covered it before putting it into the refrigerator. On Friday, he went to work as Shop Foreman at Austin Concrete Works. (My grandma also worked at Jack Brown Cleaners as a seamstress).

So on Friday, whn we got out of Reilly elementary school and Aunt Dorothy picked us up (me, Ricky and Roxanne) and brought us to the house, cousins Oscar and Ernie were also on the way over since they lived two blocks away. (Our Arevalo Family stayed close!- and still do in many cases!)

At some point later on, cousin Alex moved in with us and I remember him hanging out with us a few times- (not always because he started working at 13 years old as a stocker/cleanup person at Ballard's Drive-In Grocery on 41st and Medical Parkway...More on this soon.) Email me if you want me to continue or not , please. I am testing out the functionality of this new site and appreciate your input!
